The African Violet,
scientifically known as Streptocarpus, belongs to the gesneriad family which contains over 2,500 species of plants. The African violet is probably the most popular and best-known member. Many gesneriads grow well under the same household conditions we enjoy. You can grow other gesneriads like Achimenes, Episcias, Sinningias and Primulinas alongside your violets.
2022 Project Plant Winners
(Left to Right): Jacqueline Licciardi (tied 3rd), Gloria Borysewicz (2nd), Connie Weir (1st) & Chris Hedberg (tied 3rd)
On June 15, 2023 we held our annual judging of our project plant. We selected a standard African violet, 'Strawberry Fields', hybridized by Lyndon Lyon Greenhouses as our project plant for 2022. The blossom is a red semidouble to double frilled star with darker fantasy markings and a white edge. The foliage is medium green, plain, and quilted. Thanks to all the members who participated and congratulations to the winners!
