The African Violet,
scientifically known as Saintpaulia ionantha, belongs to the gesneriad family which contains over 2,500 species of plants. The African violet is probably the most popular and best known member. Many gesneriads grow well under the same household conditions we enjoy. You can grow other gesneriads like Streptocarpuses and Primulinas, along side your violets.
Project Plant Winners
(from left): Gloria Borysewicz (3rd), John Hersey (1st), & Chris Hedberg (2nd)
On June 17, 2021 we held our annual judging of our project plant. We selected a standard African violet, Sassy Sadie, hybridized by Lyndon Lyon Greenhouses as our project plant for 2020. The flower is a very light, maroon/red, semi-double pansy. A dark fringed, maroon band outlines each petal. The foliage is medium green and quilted. Thanks to all the members who participated and congratulations to the winner!
